The German heavy metal scene began to emerge in the late 1970s and early 1980s with the “Teutonic thrash” movement, led by bands such as Kreator, Sodom, and Destruction. At the same time, Accept brought German heavy metal to an international audience with their powerful sound and anthem-like songs. In the 1990s and 2000s, the country became a stronghold for power metal through bands like Helloween, Blind Guardian, and Gamma Ray, while also fostering a massive gothic and industrial scene with acts such as Rammstein and Lacrimosa.
Germany is also home to some of the world’s most famous metal festivals, including Wacken Open Air, Summer Breeze, and Party.San Open Air, attracting fans from all over the globe. Today, Germany remains one of the most important countries for heavy metal, known for its dedicated fanbase, thriving live scene, and the sheer diversity of its metal subgenres.
