Copenhagen is the capital and largest city of Denmark, with about 660,000 people in the municipality and around 1.4 million in the urban area. Founded as a fishing village and trading settlement in the Middle Ages, it grew into Denmark’s royal, political and cultural centre, with the official founding often linked to Bishop Absalon’s castle in 1167. The city is best known for its harbour, cycling culture, design, food scene and compact historic centre, where key sights include Tivoli Gardens, Nyhavn, Christiansborg Palace, Rosenborg Castle, the Round Tower and the old streets around Strøget. Neighbourhoods such as Vesterbro, Nørrebro and Refshaleøen add bars, venues, street food, breweries and alternative culture, while Christianshavn and the harbour baths show the city’s waterfront side. Getting in and around is straightforward via Copenhagen Airport, Copenhagen Central Station, the Metro, S-trains, buses and one of Europe’s most bike-friendly street networks.
