Oslo is Norway’s capital, a fjord-side city of roughly 710,000 people (metro ~1.6 million) founded in the 11th century and rebuilt as Christiania after a 1624 fire before regaining its original name in 1925. Its compact centre runs from the Opera House and new MUNCH museum in Bjørvika to the royal palace and Akershus Fortress, with waterfront promenades at Aker Brygge/Tjuvholmen and ferries hopping to the Bygdøy museums (Fram, Kon-Tiki) in summer. Green space is close at hand: the Vigeland sculpture park, island beaches and the forested marka with year-round trails, plus Holmenkollen’s ski jump for views. Live culture ranges from the National Museum to venues like Rockefeller, Sentrum Scene and Blå. Getting in and around is straightforward via Oslo Airport Gardermoen (OSL) with the Flytoget express, a clean T-Bane/ tram/ bus network, and frequent regional rail and ferries. Oslo is the home for many famous black metal bands and festivals like Inferno Metal Festival and Tons of Rock.
